What Day Will Disability Checks Be Deposited This Month?
If you have a disability that has left you unable to work and earn income as you normally would, you may be receiving disability benefits. If you aren’t already receiving those benefits, you may be interested in applying. Either way, you probably want to know when you can expect to receive your disability check each month and how much it might be.
Those are normal and understandable questions to ask. After all, these benefits can be an essential source of financial security and stability for disabled individuals and those they love. Let’s take a closer look at the types of benefits that may be available and when they are typically paid.
What Types of Benefits Are Available?
Those who struggle with long-term disabilities may have a variety of options for disability benefits. The first option is to seek disability benefits from the Social Security Administration. The Social Security Administration offers two disability benefits, depending upon the circumstances involved. These include:
- Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) Benefits: SSDI benefits are disability benefits that the Social Security Administration provides to those with a qualifying medical condition that has rendered them disabled for at least one continuous calendar year or more. Recipients must also be “insured.” This means they worked a qualifying job for a sufficient length of time and paid a portion of their salary into the Social Security system.
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Benefits: Like SSDI benefits, SSI benefits are disability benefits paid to those with a qualifying medical disability that has caused them to be disabled for at least one continuous calendar year or more. To receive SSI benefits, however, applicants need not be “insured.” However, they have to have income and resources below a certain threshold established by the Social Security Administration. That threshold may change from year to year.
Regardless of the type of benefit, whether SSDI or SSI, payments will be made based on an individual’s work history, earnings, and/or income level. Payments will not be based on the particular condition itself.
In addition to the benefits offered by the Social Security Administration, some individuals may qualify for long-term disability benefits through a private insurer. An employer may provide these benefits, or an individual may have purchased these benefits privately. In either case, the terms of the policy will dictate the conditions under which an individual can receive benefits, so consulting with an attorney regarding your particular circumstances will be important.
Is There a Payment Schedule?
This is a question that many people ask, and for good reason. It’s understandable to want to be able to plan and budget based on the dates that your payments will be made.
For those who receive SSI benefits, those benefits are typically distributed on the first day of each month. If the first day happens to fall on a weekend, payments will generally be made on the Friday prior to the first day of the month.
Those who receive SSDI benefits can expect a different payment schedule, however. Although the day on which SSDI payments are made is the same each month, that date will vary depending on the recipient’s birth date.
Payments are usually made on the following schedule:
- 1st through the 10th of the month: Payment is made on the second Wednesday.
- 11th to 20th of the month: Payment is made on the third Wednesday.
- 21st through the 31st of the month: Payment is made on the fourth Wednesday.
There is an exception to this rule, however. For individuals who began receiving SSDI payments prior to 1997, payments are usually made on the first day of each month. If that day falls on a weekend, then the payment will be made on the Friday prior to that date.
While those rules apply to disability payments from the Social Security Administration, it is important to keep in mind that payments from private insurers may be made differently. Typically, the terms of the policy will dictate payment dates. Consulting a knowledgeable and experienced attorney regarding your particular circumstances is always advised.
