The New 12 Compassionate Allowances
The United States government’s Compassionate Allowances Program exists to identify diseases and other medical conditions that meet Social Security Disability Compassionate Allowances standards for disability benefits. Compassionate allowances include certain cancers, adult brain disorders, and a number of rare disorders that affect children.
The Social Security Administration protects individuals with these conditions, who often cannot afford care due to expensive treatments and medications or lack of health insurance coverage.
The 12 New Conditions Added to the Compassionate Allowances List (CAL)
Social Security Acting Commissioner Kilolo Kijakazi recently announced that the Social Security Administration added 12 new health conditions under its Compassionate Allowances Program. The agency consulted with doctors, researchers from the National Institute of Health, and members of the Social Security and Disability Determination Service community to determine which conditions qualify as compassionate allowances.
People with these conditions and other potential CAL conditions can qualify for and more quickly access Social Security disability benefits. The Social Security Administration set up this program to provide claim responses and ensure that people get benefits quickly for severe medical conditions.
The new Compassionate Allowance conditions are:
- NUT Carcinoma
- Mowat-Wilson Syndrome
- Angioimmunoblastic T-cell Lymphoma
- Gerstmann-Straussler-Scheinker Disease
- Blastic Plasmacytoid Dendritic Cell Neoplasm
- Myelodysplastic Syndrome with Excess Blasts
- Microvillus Inclusion Disease – Child (disorders that affect children)
- Renal Amyloidosis – AL Type
- Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma
- Pfeiffer Syndrome – Types II and III
- Pontocerebellar Hypoplasia
- Posterior Cortical Atrophy

How to File a Claim with Compassionate Allowance

Visit the Social Security Administration website. When you submit an online claim, the system automatically evaluates it to handle CAL claims quickly.
